About the Certificate Program

Join the creative world of interior design! For novices and those with experience, this certificate program has been expanded to offer more hands-on training to prepare you for the real world of interior design. Upon completion of this program, you may qualify to work in design (interior, lighting, drapery, etc.) firms, furniture stores, and more! Please note that this noncredit program does not satisfy NCIDQ, ASID, or CID  eligibility requirements.

Earn your certificate in as few as two semesters. Students may take courses individually without commitment to the entire program. Students who successfully complete the required and two elective courses are awarded a certificate from the School of Liberal Studies & Continuing Education, reflecting 24 continuing education units (CEUs).

Note: Certificate programs must be completed within three years unless approved by the director of continuing education.

To qualify for the certificate, students must:

  1. submit a Certificate Form of Intent
  2. attend at least 80 percent of the classes
  3. achieve a “Pass” designation in coursework from the instructors
  4. submit a Certificate Request Form after all requirements have been met
  5. submit a Professional Certificate Program Survey

  5. History and Styles of Interior Design and Decorative Arts II
  6. Fabrics of Interior Design
  7. Colors for Interior Design
  8. Architectural Styles and Global Dwellings
  9. Architectural Blueprints and Basic Building Construction

  1. Basic Drafting/Graphics and Rendering II
  2. Introduction to AutoCAD
  3. Business Practices for Interior Designers
  4. Trade Sources*
  5. Lighting Design
  6. Window Treatments and Upholstery
  7. The Art of Display
  8. Kitchen and Bath Design
  9. Materials and Methods of Construction
  10. Legal and Ethical Issues in Interior Design* (new in Fall 2013)
  11. Feng Shui
  12. Sustainable Design
  13. Wall and Surface Treatments
    *Legal and Ethical Issues in Interior Design, taken with Trade Sources, is equivalent to one elective

Additional Electives
Offered by the Appraisal Studies Certificate Program:

  1. Understanding the Art Market
  2. The Art and Antiques Market

The total full tuition cost for the required courses is $2800. The total full tuition cost for the two electives required to complete the certificate varies. In addition to the tuition, there is a $25 nonrefundable registration fee paid once per semester. Purchase College matriculated students, employees and alumni, as well as students who pay in full by the early registration discount deadline qualify for reduced tuition fees.

Optional Internship
When available, internships may be pursued independently after all certificate requirements are completed. Recommendations from two instructors are required.
