All classes will be taught on a rotating basis by Dong Varone and
company members, ensuring a rich overview of styles and perspectives for
each student.
Investigating the line of human movement and how it can affect the broader strokes of our dancing is at the center of this highly technical, movement based class. Through the expansive use of the back and limbs, Varone's style will be explored through an emphasis of breath, strength, dynamic lyricism and musicality.
Levels and classes by placement only.
Taught by Doug Varone & company members on a rotating basis. The investigation of individual phrases created on the spot will be the cornerstone of this specialized class. This class will delve into the detailed texture of newly created material. Students learn how to assimilate movement quickly and explore immediately the movement in terms of quality and musicality. Phrases from the company repertory will also be offered.
These will be mixed-level classes.
Designed to support a beginning or developing yoga practice, the class will focus on balancing the body through gently dynamic postures and a mindfulness of breath. Patient practice in standing alignment, forward bending, back bending, twisting and inverting, sustains the body throughout the day.
Ballet technique will be taught with an emphasis on the freedom and support inherent in the skeletal structure and the integration of technical ability from a neutral stance. This starting point will allow movement to flow from a centered core and radiate into space through long, connected limbs. The awareness of specific individual movement is addressed as is the dancer's impact on space both physically and mentally. Musicality and phrasing are prime ingredients.
The 1st half of this class explores the principles of the Pilates System of exercise and how it applies to dancers and their training. The class will focus on the Pilates mat series, learning the form and how to work inside the structure. The 2nd half looks at Bartenieff Fundamentals as a tool for body awareness, efficiency of movement and range of motion. You will learn a series of exercises on the floor and transfer them to simple movement explorations.
Doug will teach a composition class with an initial emphasis on compositional structure. Using these ideas as a springboard, new devices for expanding and inventing material will be explored. This class will push toward the development of a new work utilizing material built in class. A large body of material will be created, varied and manipulated during the three weeks both in and out of the studio. For students seriously interested in choreography.
Class size is limited.
A work within the company's repertory will be staged by company members for performance at the end of the workshop. This will be a class that focuses on movement dynamics and spatial awareness within group choreography. One of Varone's larger works will be explored here as duets and solos gather seamlessly into group explosions of choreographed chaos.
Two mixed-level classes
Non-traditional techniques of partnering that deal with weight shift and balance supports will be explored. Both duet and group work will be created to investigate the details of shape, space and energy as it relates to compositional forms.
This class offers the student an opportunity to be involved in the creation of a new work. The experience of being part of a choreographic process will be the main focus, with an informal showing at the end of the workshop.
Class size is limited.
Through a series of games, physical exercises, vocal and text exercises, the class will explore a range of physical choices and their connection to dramatic character.
