Tulsa Screening: Wednesday, March 2, 2011, 5pm, Room 1016 Visual Arts Building - Curator, Chelsea Spengemann, will screen the recently released 1968 film “Tulsa”, made during the same time as the photographs in the exhibition. Both events are part of the Neuberger Museum of Art’s First Wednesday series.
The Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery at Purchase College presents celebrated photographer and filmmaker, Larry Clark in Fifty Photographs with Text: The Larry Clark Tulsa Portfolio (1980). The black and white photographs in this exhibition were taken in Tulsa, Oklahoma over a period of eight years, beginning in 1963, and gained notoriety when published in 1971 as Tulsa, which provides an intimate and reflective treatment of Clark’s family and friends. Experimentation with amphetamine and the addiction and tragedy that ensued are grippingly portrayed in Clark’s precise, tense portraits. This dramatic project played a major role in establishing photography as a medium through which personal experiences become emblems of an entire culture.
Visitors will be able to see the photographs of Tulsa arranged following the original book format, including accompanying text. Says Spengemann: “The goal is for viewers to carefully consider how each photograph and text in Clark’s groundbreaking series works together to effectively narrate his experience among a group of hometown friends over an eight-year period during which radical cultural shifts were taking place in America.”
Fifty Photographs with Text: The Larry Clark Tulsa Portfolio (1980) was curated by Chelsea Spengemann, a Neuberger Museum of Art Curatorial Fellow and recent graduate of the MA program in Modern and Contemporary Art, Criticism, and Theory at Purchase College, under the supervision of Tracy Fitzpatrick, Neuberger Curator and Purchase College Associate Professor of Art History.
A pamphlet with an essay by the curator, published by the Neuberger Museum of Art, and a complete archive of press clippings from 1971-2010, related to Tulsa, also will be available.

A wall drawing first created by renowned artist Pat Steir in 1987, Self-Portrait: An Installation, was re-created in the Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery as part of the exhibition on view at the Neuberger Museum of Art: Pat Steir: Drawing out of Line. The installation which covers the walls of the gallery with vastly enlarged images of parts of the face, was inspired by Renaissance and Baroque drawing manuals discussed in E.H. Gombrich’s seminal text Art and Illusion (1956) as well as those in the New York Public Library’s Rare Books Room. Undergraduate and graduate students selected and led by School of Art + Design faculty members Sharon Horvath, Julian Kreimer and Michael Torlen executed the work according Steir’s instructions and under the supervision of by Anthony Sansotta, the artistic director of the Sol Lewitt estate. The drawing, which commenced on September 15th, took approximately two weeks to complete, giving the public a rare opportunity to see the process unfold through the windows of the Maass Gallery.

The Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery is pleased to present David Schwarz Project 12 (DSP): Dannielle Tegeder, a 1994 BFA alumna, currently represented by Priska C. Juschka Fine Art in New York. For this exhibition, Tegeder introduces a new series of animated drawings inspired from the composed and interconnected conceptual spaces of her drawings and paintings on paper.
Tegeder has been recognized with numerous grants and residencies from prestigious foundations, such as the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Yaddo Foundation Residency, the Elizabeth Foundation, Lower East Side Print Fellowship Edition Award and the Marie Walsh Sharpe Fellowship. Her works are in several collections including the Permanent Drawings Collection at the Museum of Modern Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; and at the Weatherspoon Museum of Art, Greensboro, NC. Recent exhibitions have included the 183rd Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art at the National Academy of Design, New York, NY; Nature Interrupted at the Chelsea Art Museum, New York, NY; Art on Paper at the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensborough, NC; and Mapping the Self, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL.

From her tendency to engage in highly process-driven tactile endeavors and her training in the craft-based disciplines of woodworking and furniture design, Christine Lee explores, stretches and refines the typical associations and intended functions of mundane materials. Her objects and installations reflect her rhythmic, repetitive exploration of these outdated, discarded or recycled materials, examining their histories while promoting alternative destinations. Lee's work in this highly anticipated exhibit was produced during her residency at the School of Art+Design during the Fall 2009 semester. The Windgate Artist-in-Residence program in Applied Design brings a new artist to the College each semester to explore new work.
