Frequently Asked Questions

What qualities or skills do you look for in a candidate?

Time management is probably the most important skill to have. Juggling academics with paraprofessional tasks and social life can be a big challenge. Additionally, organizational skills (ability to situate, structure and prioritize tasks) and good interpersonal skills are very necessary.

Why are there so many different parts to the selection process?

Our process contains essay questions, a group process activity section and an individual interview. It is through these forms that we assess each candidate’s written and oral communication skills very intensely. E-mails and written reports are consistent components of every position type we have so you must be able to communicate effectively in written form. Also, your ability to orally communicate in both groups and individually is of equal importance. And lastly, we have a high expectation that our staff members be role models and the interview process captures this best.

What happens after I turn in my application?

Your application essays are scored to determine if your application continues to the next round of group process and an individual interview. Applications are due on a Friday with notification made via e-mail the following Wednesday.

How long do group process and the individual interviews take on Saturday?

Group process is a morning long process beginning at 8:30am and concluding by 11am. Candidates then return in the afternoon for a 30-minute interview.

If I am selected, will I have any say in the building or living area that I am placed?

We do ask during your interview for your preferences. However, they are just that- your preferences. Ultimately vacancy location and staff composition dictate placement. If you are offered a position, you cannot accept the position but decline the placement. You must either accept or decline both.
