Purchase College Strategic Plan, 2010-2015
Direction 4: Toward te Greater Purchase: Connections from the Local to the Global
Purchase College shares the mission of the State University of New York, which is to fuel the engine of economic, cultural, and intellectual growth locally, nationally, and globally. We intend to fulfill this mission by creating strong connections with partners at home and abroad and by educating creative, entrepreneurial, and responsible students. We want to broaden the learning locus of our students from the campus to the world.
Student Affairs Unit Plan, 2010-2015
Goal 3: Implement Structures and Strategies to Contribute to a "Greater Purchase"
Strategy 2: Involve, intergrate, and develop Purchase College in the community.
Measure of Success: Increase in numner of community partnerships & faculty collaborations created.
Action Steps:
Within our mission statement, we highlight a commitment to preparing our students for an increasingly global and multicultural landscape by providing them with the leadership skills to impact social change.
It is through our community partnerships, that our office realizes these goals by generating genuine learning labs for our students and at the same timeproviding an invaluable service contribution to an organization's fulfillment of its mission and goals. It is this reciprocity that inspires sustainablility and significance.
We are most interested in partnerships that are sustainable, meaning we favor those in which we can build an ongoing interaction. The details of a given project can and probably will adjust but the relationship between our organizations will presist.
Additionally, we have a preference for serice learning activities. Service learing is pedagogy. It is an academic method of teaching and learning. It is not simply volunteering or community service. Here are some other key points:
Please note this example when considering your ideas:
SERVICE= Reading storybooks to elementary-aged children.
LEARNING= Course work in conversational Spanish
SERVICE LEARNING= A Spanish course partners with a local community center and provides students as readers and menors for an after-school program
