The Tony Award nominees were announced today and for the second year in a row, Purchase alumni garnered three of the four nominations in the Best Lighting category. The twist this year, however, is all three nominations were earned by the same alumnus: Kenneth Posner '87.
In the category of Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Posner received nominations for his work on Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella, Pippin, and Kinky Boots.
What's more, this accomplishment seems to be unprecedented—the first time anyone has received three nominations in a single category—according to the public relations firm representing the American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards®.
Posner was nominated last year for Other Desert Cities, but lost to fellow Purchase alumnus Jeff Croiter '93, who won for his work on Peter and the Starcatcher.
This would be Posner's second Tony; he won in 2007 for Best Lighting Design in a Play for The Coast of Utopia, for which he also won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lighting Design in a Play that same year. He's been nominated for numerous Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards since 1991.
