Five students from Purchase College received the 2006 Chancellor’s Scholar Athlete Award from the State University of New York. The award is given to student athletes who have performed on the playing field and won recognition in their sport, while maintaining a 3.5 GPA or higher in their academic course work.

The Purchase student athletes are Nicole DeGennaro, tennis; Helen Cross, cross country; Caleb White, volleyball and cross country; Shawn Ryder, cross country; and Gregory Mayo, baseball. Purchase College is a member of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC).

Nicole DeGennaro, a junior from Middletown, N.Y., is captain of the women’s tennis team. She is a journalism major, with a biology minor, and holds a 4.04 GPA. In addition to being named to the NEAC All-Conference Tennis Team, she is the recipient of a 2004 Chancellor’s Scholar Athlete Award and an ITA Scholar Athlete Award. She is president of the fencing club and has been named to the Dean’s List every semester.

Helen Cross is a junior from Yorktown Heights, N.Y. She is a new media major with a 4.03 GPA. She was named to the NEAC All-Conference Cross Country Second Team and the Dean’s List. She is a natural runner who has also raced in England where she reached the national finals.

Caleb White is a senior from Philmont, N.Y. He is a music major with a 3.78 GPA and received the 2006 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. A three-year captain of the volleyball team, he was named to the NEAC All-Conference Volleyball Second Team. He is also captain of the cross country team and was a member of the Purchase College Inaugural Baseball Team as first baseman and pitcher. He received the 2005 Purchase College Athlete of the Year Award and the 2005 Chancellor’s Scholar Athlete Award.

Shawn Ryder is a junior from Stanley, N.Y. He is a history major with a 3.69 GPA. He was captain of the 2005 Men’s Cross Country Team, winner of the 2005 Lehman Invitational, and named to the NEAC All-Conference Cross Country Second Team. Ryder served as Vice President of the 2005-2006 NEAC Student Athletic Advisory Committee and has been elected president for 2006-2007. He is on the Dean’s List, a senator in the Purchase Student Government Association, and helped organize recent service trips for Purchase students to Philadelphia and New Orleans during Spring Break.

Gregory Mayo is a senior from West Harrison, N.Y. He is a music major with a 3.61 GPA. He is a three-time captain of the baseball team. As a pitcher, he is the team career leader in wins and strikeouts. He was named the team’s most valuable player in 2004 and was a 2005 NEAC Athlete of the Week. He has been named to the Dean’s List every semester.
