Purchase College has appointed Lynn Mahoney the College’s first Associate Provost for Integrative Learning/Vice President for Student Affairs. Dr. Mahoney, of Purchase, NY, has worked at Purchase since 1996 and is a professor in the History Board of Study.
“Her experiences in academic support services, in the classroom and as a residential faculty member make her ideally suited for this newly configured position that brings together academic and student affairs,” said Provost Elizabeth Langland in announcing the appointment.
Dr. Mahoney received her B.A. in American Studies from Stanford University and her Ph.D. in History from Rutgers University. Her areas of specialization include nineteenth-century U.S. history and the history of race and gender. Her doctoral work on the nineteenth-century novelist Elizabeth Stoddard, Elizabeth Stoddard and the Boundaries of Bourgeois Culture, was published in 2004 (Routledge Press).
Dr. Mahoney served as the director of the Liberal Studies program from 2000-2003. In that position she developed a general education program for adult students, increased enrollment by close to 50 percent and implemented the College’s first extension site at Rockland Community College. Dr. Mahoney served as chair of the Retention Committee for several years and implemented many of its key initiatives, including the re-implementation of a specially designed seminar for freshmen and the creation of the Purchase College Advising Center. In 2003 she became the founding director of the Advising Center. In that capacity, Dr. Mahoney worked with faculty and staff to strengthen the college’s faculty advising system, to increase students’ identification with their class cohort and to create mechanisms to better track students’ progress to degree completion.
