Purchase College President Thomas J. Schwarz announced the appointment of Dr. Christine L. Persico as the new Dean of the School of Liberal Studies and Continuing Education. Most recently she had been the Dean of the Metropolitan New York Regional Center of Empire State College.
“We welcome Dr. Persico to Purchase College,” said President Schwarz. “She has extensive experience in education as both a teacher and administrator encompassing program development and collaborative studies. With the interdisciplinary knowledge that Dr. Persico brings to her new position, I am confident she will continue to move the School of Liberal Studies and Continuing Education forward.”
As Dean, Dr. Persico will build on the educational partnerships Purchase has developed with community businesses and continue to grow the College’s successful Liberal Studies B.A. Degree Completion program.
At Metropolitan New York Regional Center for Empire State College, Dr. Persico served as Chief Executive and Chief Academic Officer for the college’s largest and most comprehensive regional center.
She expanded programs in the arts, business, human services and technology, and developed comprehensive programs and services for students in writing, math, foreign language and computer literacy. Under her leadership, center-wide enrollment grew by 65 percent.
She collaborated with faculty to develop innovative approaches to meet SUNY General Education requirements and also taught several courses including Adult Education Theory and Practice, Social Emotional Intelligence, Program Development and Educational Planning, among others.
Prior to her appointment at Empire State College, she was the Executive Director of Enrollment Management at Teachers College, Columbia University. There she developed the college’s first annual strategic enrollment management plan and increased the applicant pool by more than 10 percent.
During her 12 years at Brooklyn College, CUNY she served as Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management, Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and Executive Director and Director of Adult and Community Education. She dramatically increased the number of applications to the adult degree, honors and special programs, and designed a new undergraduate degree in Liberal Studies. She also was responsible for tripling enrollment in the Adult and Community Education program.
At New York City College of Technology, CUNY she held positions in the Office of Academic Affairs and the Division of Continuing Education
Dr. Persico received her B.A. in psychology from Queens College, CUNY; her M.S.W. from Hunter College School of Social Work, CUNY; and her Ed.D from Teacher’s College, Columbia University.
