Four students from Purchase College will participate in a service project in New Orleans with Hillels of Westchester during Spring Break, March 16-23. The students will be rebuilding houses destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
The students are Isabella Guthrie-Ashton, Emily Lemieszewski, Inna Karaseva, and Morgan Rappaport.
During the day, they will be on the construction sites with eight other students from Sarah Lawrence College and Pace University. In the evening the group will study Jewish texts that are connected with tzedek, a Hebrew word denoting the responsibility of Jews to work on behalf of social justice.
In New Orleans, the Hillels of Westchester group will be working with Jewish Funds for Justice, an organization devoted to grantmaking and loans, service learning, organizing, education and advocacy.
Hillel is an organization whose mission is to enrich Jewish life on campuses around the world in service of both the Jewish people and the world. Hillels of Westchester has had a home at Purchase College for many years.
