Three Purchase College student were among the 78 student athletes recognized by SUNY Chancellor John R. Ryan with the 2006-2007 Scholar-Athlete Award, which recognizes a combination of academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement.
“The Scholar Athlete Award is one of the most selective and prestigious awards bestowed by SUNY, because it speaks to the hard work and dedication our student athletes put forth both in the classroom and in their particular sport where they compete throughout the year,” said Chancellor Ryan.
Nicole Wiktor, an economics and sociology major with a 4.0 GPA, was recognized for her academic and athletic performance as part of the Purchase women’s tennis team. A junior, she had an outstanding season, earning NEAC Student/Athlete Player of the Week honors once and Purchase Student/Athlete of the Week honors twice during the season, while consistently carving up the league from her spot in the lineup.
Maya Seegers, a biology major with a 3.97 GPA, was recognized for her academic and athletic performance as part of the Purchase women’s cross country team. At the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships she took 11th place in the women’s 5K Middle Distance Medley and went on to garner NEAC All-Conference honors with the finish. During the season she ran as the top female for the Panthers all-season long and garnered two Purchase Student/Athlete of the Week honors during the season.
Diana Edlinger, a cinema studies major with a 3.68 GPA, was recognized for her academic and athletic performance as part of the Purchase women’s soccer team. She was a key member of the Purchase team that won this year’s North Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament Championship, and played a pivotal role on the 2005 team that went 18-2-1. She received the Freshman Award for her performance on the women’s soccer team, setting a freshman record for points.
