Jazz great and Purchase professor Jon Faddis was honored for his advocacy of the arts at the Fall Gala of the Alliance of New York State Arts Organizations.
Faddis, a celebrated trumpeter, also was the featured entertainment for the evening. Longtime jazz impresario George Wein, who created the Newport Jazz Festival, was honorary co-chair of the event and performed with Faddis. Richard J. Schwartz was the other co-chair. Stephanie Simon of NY1 was emcee.
The Alliance provides essential leadership and services to strengthen New York State arts and cultural organizations.
Jon Faddis is also Director of Jazz Performance at the Purchase College School of the Arts, Conservatory of Music. His current album, Teranga, has been released to critical acclaim. Dizzy Gillespie, a close friend and mentor, said of Faddis, â€œheâ€™s the best ever, including me!â€ Faddis has been the director of the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band (1992-2002), and its successor group, the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra of New York. Faddis became artistic director of the Chicago Jazz Ensemble in 2004. In addition to teaching, and leading both his New York and Chicago groups, he leads the Jon Faddis Quartet, as well.
