Wendy Maruyama Artist-In-Residence Exhibition

A professor at San Diego State University, Wendy Maruyama is an acclaimed furniture designer whose work has been featured in leading collections, exhibitions and publications in the United States and abroad.  Her pieces are in the Museum of Craft and Design in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and in nearly 40 private collections.  Trained initially as a traditional woodworker, her work deviates from the norm in the field of studio furniture in the use of unexpected materials and imagery often inspired by visits to France, England, Japan, Korea, and China.  Ms Maruyama is the Fall 2008 Artist-In-Residence in the School of Art + Design.  For more information, call 914-251-6750.

School of Art+Design Lecture: Brian Gladwell

Brian Gladwell designs and makes furniture in Regina, Saskatchewan.  In addition to client commissions, Gladwell has exhibited work at the Dunlop Art Gallery in Regina, the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon, the San Francisco Gallery of Craft and Folk Art and the Susan Whitney Gallery (his dealer) in Regina.  He has participated in many regional, national and international group exhibitions and has curated three exhibitions of Craft and Furniture. Gladwell writes for craft and decorative arts publications and is teaching a Master Class in Applied Design: Exploring Metals at the School of Art+Design, Purchase College during the Spring 2009 semester.

School of Art+Design Lecture: Ellen Driscoll, Sculptor
6:30 PM, Visual Arts Building Room 1016, Free
Ellen Driscoll makes sculpture, drawings and public art inspired by architecture, the ancient memory arts and primitive imaging techniques such as shadow play.  She utilizes a disparate array of materials including steel, newspaper, cloth and glass to create works that explore topics like decay and regeneration, motion and stasis.

School of Art+Design Lecture: Mira Nakashima, Woodworker

Mira Nakashima was born in Seattle, Washington in 1942.  She moved to New Hope, PA in 1943, attended the Solebury School in 1959, Harvard University in 1963, and Waseda University in Tokyo in 1966.  She has four children and five grandchildren.  Mira worked under her father, George Nakashima, from 1970 to 1990, and took over running the Studio after his death in 1990.
