David Schwarz Project 8
Functioning as a project space for the Neuberger Museum’s exhibition Person of the Crowd, the Contemporary Art of Flânerie, the School of Art+Design presents a selection of participating artists from the museum exhibition which examines the role of the artist-flâneur in cities around the world. In keeping with the campus-wide theme of the African Diaspora, the artists in this exhibition specifically approach the degree to which their African and African-American cultural backgrounds and influences have affected how “they join street life in order to make art about postmodern cities…and the people who inhabit them.” M-F, 9 AM-5 PM, Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery, Art+Design Bldg. Purchase Opera presents Mozart’s comedy of manners Cosi Fan Tutte. In the course of 24 hours, the fiancés of two sisters pretend to have gone off to war, but instead disguise themselves to try to seduce the other sister. presents Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, directed by David Bassuk. Madame Ranevskaya has chased her lover across Europe and returns to find that her beloved Russian estate, with its beautiful orchard, will soon be auctioned. Characters from her old world collide comically and then retreat into fantastic daydreams. Jewish Studies Lecture
Archaeologist and author Jodi Magness will discuss “The Archaelology of Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls.” The Dead Sea Scrolls are a collection of over 900 scrolls from caves around the site of Qumran, on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea. The scrolls represent the library of a Jewish sect that lived at Qumran. This slide-illustrated lecture examines the lifestyle and beliefs of this sect based on information from the archaeological remains at Qumran and from the scrolls. 7:30 PM, Humanities Theatre, Durst Family Humanities Bldg. New Media Lecture Artist and educator Amy Franceschini will discuss research-based projects that look at how the local relates to larger global issues. She will present works she has collaborated on with Futurefarmers and Free Soil that question the role of technology in art and in our every day lives. perform Terry Riley’s Sun Rings, an evening-length work in 10 movements. presents From the African Diaspora, with guest conductor Tania León, award-winning composer and conductor and visiting artist-in-residence. Purchase Repertory Theatre presents Derek Walcott’s The Odyssey, directed by Woody King. With its inspired interweaving of Homeric Caribbean themes, Walcott’s play springs from the same imaginative sources as his epic poem Omeros.
