MFA Graduate Exhibition

Purchase Repertory Theatre: Richard III by William Shakespeare

Purchase Repertory Theatre presents William Shakespeare’s Richard III. Charismatic, funny, moody, Machiavellian—Shakespeare’s villainous king is one of the Bard’s greatest creations. Richard schemes and murders his way to the crown—but can he keep it? Containing some of dramatic literature’s greatest scenes and most memorable poetry, the play provides an object lesson in the cruelty of history and the emptiness of worldly power. The Purchase Jazz Orchestra, directed by Dr. Todd Coolman, explores varied repertoire spanning the career of a jazz artist who has been on the cutting edge of both traditional and forward looking movements in jazz music. For over 30 years, Randy Brecker has been a major player in many of the most important collaborations in jazz music. Come hear an elite jazz artist in his prime. Focus on French Cinema
The Performing Arts Center
Focus on French Cinema 2009, celebrating the fifth anniversary of this series of French language films, opens on Friday April 3 at the Purchase College Performing Arts Center and runs through April 5. The series presents a weekend of contemporary French and Francophone films, including an opening night gala, U.S. premiere films as well as Meet the Directors/Actors breakfast and film workshops. School of Art+Design Lecture: John Pilson, Photographer and Video Artist

John Pilson’s most recent series, Coliseum (2006), consists of four video works that explore the shifting relationships between work and play, talk and action, the daily and the dramatic. The rhythms of language are constants in each piece: heated discussions of arcane knowledge, theatrical monologues, the physical dialogue between a group of athletes. While previous work has been concerned with the theatricality of space, these new works employ video in an exploration of group portraiture.

School of Art+Design Lecture: Michael Smith, Video Performance and Installation

Michael Smith is a video/performance/installation artist known for his eponymous performance persona named Mike, the central figure in an ongoing series of large-scale narrative based projects. Mike, an innocent who continually falls victim to trends and fashions as he negotiates an imperfect landscape, allows Smith to comment on discrepancies and absurdities in our culture while creating an unsettling mixture of humor and pathos.
